Learn How to Fix Yellow Light of Death on Your PS3 By Using A Professional PS3 YLOD Repair Guide

When the PS3 came out it was considered far superior to the Xbox 360 in terms of the failure rate of the system. As you may know, the Xbox 360 experienced a terrible system failure rate (estimated to be as high as 30%), with the most common reason for failure being the now infamous Red Ring of Death (RROD). However, a few months after Sony introduced the Playstation 3 to the market, PS3 users began experiencing something similar to the first Xbox 360 users. PS3 consoles started switching off and basically turned one of the most powerful gaming consoles in the world into basically a big paper weight.

The Yellow Light Of DeathSony was creative enough to come up with their own unique error code, which we all now know as the Yellow Light of Death or YLOD. The interesting thing is that it is caused by the exact same reason as the RROD in the Xbox 360. Sony had the opportunity to learn from Microsoft’s XBox 360 design flaws and should have come up with an error free console but instead they made the same mistake as Microsoft.

As a result, there are now thousands of PS3 owners around the world suffering from the now infamous PS3 YLOD error. But don’t worry, as I will show you how easy it actually is to fix the ps3 yellow light of death error.

Step 1:  Understanding what actually causes the PS3 YLOD.

Cause Of The YLODAs I mentioned previously, it’s actually the same problem which troubles the XBox 360. Both devices have extremely powerful processing units, and both devices are packed into as small a container as possible. Now you must understand that with powerful processors and graphics chips also comes a lot of excess heat – especially after long hours of use. Have you ever placed your hand behind the vents of your PS3? If so, you probably noticed how hot the air is. This hot air is caused by the temperature in the cores of the processor and graphics chip, which can climb to over 100 degrees C after an extended gaming session.

In fact, it can get so hot that the solder which connects the processor and graphics chip to the motherboard actually liquifies. When you turn your PS3 off it cools down and solidifies again. After hundreds of warm up/cool down cycles like this what can happen is that one of the hundreds of solder joints connecting the CPU or GPU to the motherboard breaks and there is thus no longer a contact between the chip (either processor of graphics card) and the motherboard. When this happens, your PS3 cannot power up and you get the yellow light of death (YLOD) error.

Step 2: Checking For Symptoms of the Yellow Light of Death

So how do you know your PS3 has the YLOD? Well the symptoms are pretty straight forward.

After your turn your console ON:

1. A green light appears for few seconds
2. Yellow light flashes for about a second
3. PS3 makes 3 short beeps
4. Red light keeps blinking until you power the console off

Step 3: Deciding Which Option To Take To Fix the YLOD

These are your options if your PS3 has the YLOD, and you want to fix it:

Option 1:
Don't waste moneyIf your PS3 is still under warranty simply call Sony at 800-345-7669 (800-345-SONY) and tell them you have the PS3 YLOD error. You will then have to send in your PS3 for a free repair – the downside here is that you will have to cover the shipping costs and wait for a few weeks to get your console back.

Option 2:
Has your warranty expired? Will Sony still fix it? The answer is, yes they will (or they may send you a refurbished one) but they will charge you $150 + shipping and you will only receive a 3 months warranty on the repaired or refurbished PS3. So if you get the YLOD again after 3 months you (which happens) you will have to pay $150 again… I personally would not recommend this option.

Option 3:
“OK, so my PS3 is no longer under warranty and I don’t want to pay $150 to send it to Sony, so what do I do now?” The answer is simple. You can fix your PS3 yourself! While this might sound scary at first (especially if you are not very tech savvy), don’t worry because it’s really not difficult to do at all! Loads of people with no technical knowledge have successfully fixed their PS3′s already. All you need is a professional guide to show you what to do.

So how do I fix my PS3 myself?

Fix PS3 YLOD yourself and save moneyFixing a PS3 yourself is not as difficult as you may think, and is possible even if you have never attempted anything similar. It will also save you quite a bit of money, and you could be playing your PS3 in just a couple of hours. When you decide you want to fix your PS3 yourself you have 2 more options to consider when choosing the right guide:

Option A
You can look for a free tutorial on the internet. Be warned however, that there are considerable risks associated with using a free tutorial or guide from the internet. The tutorial might not show you ALL the steps necessary to permanently fix the PS3 and you might not manage to fix your PS3. Even if you would manage to fix it the YLOD will come back within hours of game play and you will have to open up your PS3 again and perform the fix again. In a worst case scenario the tutorial might show you wrong steps or it might be not detailed enough and you will end up doing something incorrectly. This can result in permanent, unrepairable damage to your PS3.

Option B
The safest option is to purchase a professional YLOD repair guide. I recommend Rob Scheffield’s PS3LightsFix.com. It costs only $37 and reduces the risk of damaging your PS3 almost to zero (of course assuming you carefully follow all the instructions). It also features complete, step-by-step video footage of the repair process with voice commentary so you can see and hear exactly what you have to do. It makes it much easier to fix your PS3 than reading a tutorial or looking at pictures. The worst thing that could possibly happen is that you might not be able to fix your PS3 (this is very rare). In that case you will receive a full refund of the repair guide price. So there really is NOTHING to lose.

There is also a VIP members area where you can talk to other PS3 owners about your problem, or anything else related to the PS3. Click here to see more about the members area and what you get.

  3. You won’t have to wait for weeks to get your PS3 back
